The Crossroad

Around this time last year, we were in the midst of quarantine. Our church buildings were closed down and our entire year from then on was thrown into a disarray. But now, here we are, a year later. Our church buildings and services have reopened. People are getting back to work. It seems like we are returning to a sense of normality. While that is certainly cause for celebration, it should also give us pause for reflection.

I don’t know about you, but I find myself personally and spiritually in a crossroad. We can take the path back to what we called normal. Or we can choose to continue to grow from the lessons that we’ve learned from 2020. We are creatures of habit and comfort so that temptation to do our best to return to life before the pandemic is strong. I’ll be the first to admit that. The familiar feels good.

But we’re not called to comfort or even the familiar. We’re called to be faithful. As difficult as things have been, let us also remember how God has been good to us, even in the midst of the pandemic. Let’s think about how he gave us time to spend with our families. Let’s remember how God has opened new pathways to ministry! God did not lead us through all of that just to go back. Isaiah 43:19 reminds us that God is “doing new thing.” The scripture tells us that that new thing is happening even now. The question and challenge that it brings before us is this: do you not see it?

We are at a crossroads. What path shall we take?
